Temwa Chilenga: The Malawian Woman Changing Lives One Child at a Time
NewsMay 9, 2026

In a world where many people wait for perfect conditions before making a difference, Temwa Chilenga chose to start with what she had. Today, she is widely recognised across Malawi for her dedication to helping homeless children and orphans through the Zoe Foundation, an organisation she founded in Lilongwe to give vulnerable children hope, care, and a second chance at life.
Born around 1997 in a family of seven children, Temwani is the fifth born. Her journey was never straightforward. Before becoming known for humanitarian work, she initially pursued journalism, believing it would shape her future. However, along the way, she realised it was not her true calling. In 2013, she applied for teacher training in Dowa and was selected. She later became a trained primary school teacher and also worked part-time at St. John Convent Primary School.
But even while teaching, her heart remained with children facing hardship. What started as a simple act of kindness buying school books for vulnerable children who could not afford them slowly grew into something much bigger. Temwa began helping more children with basic needs, feeding programs, and emotional support. Over time, her passion transformed into a mission, eventually leading to the creation of Zoe Foundation.
Despite facing limited resources and challenges, Temwa refused to give up. Her determination and consistency began attracting attention both locally and internationally. In 2022, she received the prestigious Commonwealth Points of Light Award, recognising her extraordinary efforts in supporting vulnerable children in Malawi.
Her work has also received support from organisations such as Beautify Malawi Trust, which has assisted with feeding and caring for children under the foundation. Through social media, especially Facebook, Temwa continues to share updates about the children’s lives, inspiring thousands of people who follow her journey online.
Today, Temwa Chilenga stands as a reminder that true impact does not always begin with wealth or power sometimes it begins with compassion, courage, and the decision to care. From buying books for a few children to building a foundation that changes lives, her story continues to inspire many across Malawi and beyond.
