Ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa have led to the repatriation of approximately 3,000 African nationals back to their home countries, raising serious concerns across the continent.

 Beyond the humanitarian impact, the crisis is now affecting the country's creative sector, particularly artists who depend on international performances for their livelihoods.

According to Mmamakolo Kubayi, South African artists are experiencing a wave of gig cancellations across Africa.

 These cancellations are reportedly linked to growing concerns over xenophobia and migration tensions within South Africa.

Kubayi noted that many artists who regularly perform across the continent are now facing significant income losses due to the cancellations.

"The majority of artists perform across the continent, and many of them are seeing their gigs being cancelled. This is an income loss for the artists," she said.

The minister further disclosed that the government plans to engage with stakeholders in the creative industry to assess the extent of the impact.

 The discussions will focus on understanding the economic and reputational effects that the ongoing situation is having on South African artists.

Kubayi also called for calm and urged communities to reject vigilantism. 

She emphasized that xenophobia not only harms foreign nationals but also damages South Africa's own economy, particularly its cultural and creative sectors. 

She warned that the consequences are now being felt beyond the country's borders, as artists continue to lose performance opportunities and face growing challenges in maintaining their presence across the African continent.
