Scorchers Struggle for Consistency Despite WAFCON Qualification

The Malawi Women's National Football Team continue to show a mix of promise and inconsistency as they prepare for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Under head coach Lovemore Fazili, the team has managed five wins, two draws, and eight losses in 15 matches played between January 2025 and April 2026 a run that highlights both progress and concern.
Their most recent outing at the FIFA Women’s Series in Nairobi exposed some of those struggles. The Scorchers suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Australia and a 3-2 loss to India, finishing bottom in the four-nation tournament.
Statistically, the team has shown attacking intent, scoring 28 goals across the 15 matches nearly two per game. However, defensive vulnerabilities remain an issue, with 32 goals conceded, leaving them with a negative goal difference.
There have been bright moments. The Scorchers recorded convincing wins, including back-to-back 3-0 victories over Lesotho and an impressive 8-1 win during the Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa. Most importantly, they secured qualification for WAFCON after a disciplined performance against Angola, sealing the spot with a 2-0 win in Lilongwe.
Speaking after the FIFA Series, Fazili described the tournament as a learning curve.
“These are good preparations towards WAFCON… we have learned a lesson,” he said.
However, the coach also raised concerns over the commitment of some foreign-based players, suggesting future selections will be based strictly on performance.
Football analyst George Chiusiwa believes the team is still in a rebuilding phase, urging patience while also pointing out tactical and structural gaps.
At the same time, the Football Association of Malawi has taken a measured stance, noting that facing higher-ranked teams provided valuable experience and a clear benchmark for improvement.
With WAFCON on the horizon, the focus now shifts to consistency, squad balance, and how quickly the Scorchers can turn lessons into results.
