Today, we are proud to share a story that reflects the very heart of this mission: a story where media coverage translated into real community impact.

Recently, Roots Magazine Africa highlighted the inspiring efforts of Mr. John Sturridge, a 76-year-old resident who voluntarily took on the task of rehabilitating and widening a critical road behind Kanjedza Hostel in Zomba. The road, heavily used by students from the University of Malawi, had become increasingly unsafe due to frequent robberies and poor accessibility.

Moved by concern for the safety and well-being of students, Mr. Sturridge began working on the road using his own initiative and limited resources. His selfless dedication quickly captured the admiration of many within the student community and beyond.

Students and campus leaders described his actions as a powerful example of community responsibility and patriotism. Joel Chigalu, Leader of Opposition in the students’ parliament, encouraged collective support for the initiative, leading to contributions exceeding MK105,000 alongside donations of construction materials.

When Roots Magazine Africa first shared Mr. Sturridge’s story, our goal was simple: to shine a light on an extraordinary act of kindness and inspire others to care. What followed was beyond anything we anticipated.

One of our loyal readers and top supporters, who chose to remain anonymous, was deeply touched by the story and generously contributed MK100,000 toward Mr. Sturridge’s efforts.

This week, members of the Roots Magazine Africa team had the privilege of meeting Mr. Sturridge in person and delivering the contribution on behalf of the anonymous donor and the wider Roots community. It was a powerful moment that reaffirmed the importance of responsible storytelling and community-driven journalism.
