The photograph was captured by astronauts aboard the Artemis II mission on April 6, 2026, during their flyby around the Moon. 

The image shows a crescent Earth partially in darkness, with bright cloud systems visible, as it disappears behind the Moon’s cratered surface. 

Scientists say the moment mirrors the famous “Earthrise” photo taken during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968  one of the most iconic images in space history. 

The Artemis II mission marks a major step in modern space exploration, being the first crewed mission to travel beyond low Earth orbit in decades. 

Beyond its scientific value, the image is already being praised for its emotional impact  offering a rare perspective of Earth from deep space and reminding humanity of its place in the universe.
