Jolly Bro Raises Concern Over Student Safety in Universities
Malawian-American-based artist Jolly Bro has stressed the need for authorities to address growing trends of bullying and intimidation that he alleges continue to take place in the country’s public universities.
Speaking through his Facebook page, JB voiced concern over the safety of students in public universities, stressing that institutions meant to provide education are increasingly becoming unsafe environments for Students.
Jolly Bro, whose real name is Alberto Fernando Zacarias, said he has observed a worrying tendency in some of the country’s most respected public universities where certain students bully, intimidate, and even sexually abuse fellow students without facing punishment.
According to the artist, the perpetrators are often viewed as powerful and untouchable, allowing such behavior to continue unchecked.
JB also shared his personal experience, saying he once had confrontations with some students in previous years after they allegedly attempted to intimidate him because he was considered an outsider.
However, the artist emphasized the need for authorities to take tough measures against such acts, warning that failure to act is contributing to the grooming of individuals who later continue the same abusive behavior once they attain positions of power.
His remarks come following the discovery of the body of a Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences student in the ceiling of Mpingwe Hostel.
Police are currently investigating the matter, while fellow students identified the deceased as Paul Mtenje, popularly known among peers as “Pablo.”
The remains were reportedly discovered in a decomposed state by maintenance workers conducting routine checks at the hostel, a development that sent shock and disbelief across the campus community.
Preliminary reports further indicate that a half-empty bottle of Malawi Gin was found near the scene.
